Make sure you are running XP Service Pack 3 (definitely)
Do all your Windows updates.
Make sure the Windows firewall is turned on.
Install a good antivirus and keep it updated ( I like Avast!, but other folk swear by Avira, others by Microsoft Security Essentials or AVG ... all are free .. take your pick)
Be careful where you go on the Internet, and extra careful about opening attachments in email.
I've installed the free Mcafee "Site Advisor", and Google for websites before I go there. This way I get a notification if it's a known bad site, and don't go to the wrong site by misstyping the address.
